The Centre mandated the Quality Council of India (QCI) to carry out assessment and accreditation of various diploma and certificate programmes in teacher education being offered by a large number of public and private institutions across the country.
The move has been initiated to “revitalise” pre-school and elementary education with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) making accreditation of teacher education programmes mandatory for each of the institutes through a revised regulations of 2014.
“The NCTE already signed a memorandum of understanding with the QCI for implementation of the plan,” official sources told DH.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) currently conducts quality assessment and certifies the degree level programmes offered by the teacher education institutions like BEd, MEd, BPEd and MPEd under a memorandum of understanding signed between the accreditation agency and the NCTE.
The QCI will carry out quality assessment and grant accreditation to programmes including diploma in Pre-School Education (DPSE), Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd), and Diploma in Physical Education (DPED), Diploma in Art Education (Visual Arts) and Diploma in Art Education (Performing Arts).
