West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday dubbed the BJP as “fake saffron” who can only make speeches and indulge in falsehoods.

“Saffron stands for sacrifice. Look at the saffrons of the BJP. They roam around and do whatever they want. The only thing they can do is to make speeches. These are fake saffron,” Mamata said while inaugurating a skywalk at the Dakhineswar Kali Temple.

She also said, “the real saffron are those who do not have any greed. There is sacha gerua (real saffron) and jhuta gerua (fake saffron) who can only spread falsehood and indulge in politics.”

Without naming the BJP, she accused the party of claiming that only “some people” can practice Hinduism.

“These days some claim that only some people can practice Hinduism and the rest cannot. Suddenly, these people who have popped up in the past 20 to 25 years, are lecturing us on Hinduism,” she said.

The chief minister said, “one cannot be a saint just by wearing saffron. One needs to have the heart of a saint.”
