A voter turnout of 33.42 percent was recorded till 1 pm in the bypoll for the Ludhiana West Assembly in Punjab on Thursday.

Amid tight security, the polling began at 7 am and it will continue till 6 pm. The counting of votes will be held on June 23.

District Election Officer Himanshu Jain said voting is going on peacefully.

Jain asked voters to set a new record of turnout by coming out in massive numbers to cast their votes.

He said polling will continue until the last voter is present inside the polling station.

Bypolls to five seats in four states on Thursday saw webcasting the process from all 1,354 but one polling station, voters being provided with mobile deposit facility and faster updation on Voter Turnout App. The polling in the seats were between 49.07% and 70.76% in these seats.

The bypolls were conducted in Kadi and Visavadar in Gujarat, Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab and Kaliganj in West Bengal. Ludhiana West polled the least -- 49.07% -- as per provisional figures while the highest was in Nilambur at 70.76% followed by 69.85% in Kaliganj. Kadi saw 54.49% and Visavadar had 54.61% polling.
