Calcutta HC denies anticipatory bail to Mukul Roy

Last Updated 13 February 2019, 19:05 IST

In a relief to BJP leader Mukul Roy the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday restrained the West Bengal Police from arresting him before March 7 in connection with a case of murder of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Satyajit Biswas.

However, the High Court turned down Roy’s plea for anticipatory bail in the case.

A Calcutta High Court division bench led by Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked Roy not enter Nadia district till the next order apart from reasons related to the investigation or court proceedings.
The division bench turned down Roy’s plea for anticipatory bail in view of the “gravity of the crime.” The case will again come up for hearing on March 5.
Roy, who was a TMC general secretary and the right-hand man of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee before joining BJP approached the Calcutta High Court seeking anticipatory bail on Tuesday. He was named along with three other accused in the case. While two of the accused have been arrested the third one is absconding.
The TMC MLA from the Krishnaganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district was shot dead from point-blank range by miscreants on Saturday. While the TMC district leadership had alleged that Roy was behind the murder, Roy said that he was being subjected to “political vendetta. “
Earlier Roy’s lawyer Subhashish Dasgupta said that since Roy joined BJP 25 cases has been slapped against him.
