<p>New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammed's remarks body shaming Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma triggered a controversy on Monday with the BJP launching an attack, prompting her party to instruct her to delete the social media posts and exercise greater caution in future.</p><p>Senior Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Ray too jumped into the controversy supporting Mohammed and claiming that Sharma should be out of the team while suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah among others could replace him.</p><p>Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said Congress and Trinamool should leave sportspersons alone as they are fully capable of handling their professional lives. </p>.BCCI backs Rohit Sharma, says comment against him 'unfortunate'.<p>“Remarks made by leaders from these parties, indulging in body shaming and questioning an athlete’s place in the team, are not only deeply shameful but also outright pathetic. Such comments undermine the hard work and sacrifices that our sportspersons make to represent the country on the global stage,” he added.</p><p>As a controversy raged, Mohammed claimed that she did not mean to body shame Sharma, saying it was a “generic” statement about the fitness of a sportsperson while asserting that she has been attacked for no reason and that she has the right to hold the view that he was less accomplished compared to his predecessors.</p><p>However, she deleted her controversial social media posts after Congress Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera said Mohammed “made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position” and that she has been asked to remove them.</p><p>Khera said the Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and “does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy” and advised her to “exercise greater caution in future”.</p>.'Should be taught a lesson': Congress MLA slams Rashmika Mandanna for declining invitation to Bengaluru film festival.<p>In her now deleted post, she said, Mohamed said, “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman. Need to lose weight! He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the captain of India.”</p><p>Mohammed was quoted by <em>ANI</em> as saying earlier while defending her remarks, “it was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. It is a democracy. What is wrong in saying this? Let us not forget how Virat Kohli was attacked when he supported his teammate (Mohd) Shami..."</p><p>Several BJP leaders attacked Mohammed for her social media posts on Sharma. </p><p>BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala posted on 'X', "those who have lost 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling the captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive! I guess six ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning the T20 World Cup isn’t! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way!"</p><p>Delhi Minister and BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the remarks were "deeply shameful". "Today, our team is recognized as one of the best in the country and the world. It is unacceptable to use such language against our captain," he said. </p>
