<p>The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently launched the new e-passport as part of the Passport Seva Programme 2.0.</p><p>The e-passport initiative strictly complies with the the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and ensures seamless travel for Indian passport holders.</p><p>The e-passport has a distinct look with a plastic card embedded with an electronic chip containing all the details of the passport holder, including biometric information, besides a digital signature of a passport officer. </p><p>A combined paper and electronic passport with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Chip and an antenna are embedded in it.</p><p>Here is all you need to know about the new e-passport. </p><p>Salient Features:</p><p>● The new e-passport has added features in order to avoid duplications. One of the significant features include an embedded RFID chip and antenna, integrated into the cover of the passport.</p><p>● The chip securely stores data regarding the holder's demographic details like name, date of birth, passport number along with biometric details.</p><p>● With the addition of the RFID chip, the privacy factor is enhanced. For example, the residential address of an individual will be not visible. Instead this information will be securely stored in the chip accessible only to authorised officials.</p><p>● In the new e-passport, the name of parents’ or legal guardians is excluded.</p><p>● To identify the passport's digital functionality, a gold rectangle symbol on the front cover is embossed.</p><p>● The main aim of the e-passport is to reduce manual action. This is made possible with automated identity checks at e-gates enabling immediate immigration clearance.</p><p>● The e-passports are to be launched with respect to colour. This new system facilitates easier identification and immigration processes.</p><p>● As of now, passport offices in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, and Ranchi are issuing e-Passports.</p>
