Braving heavy showers in the Darjeeling hills, hundreds of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters turned up on Thursday for a series of public meetings held to mark the 50th day of the indefinite shutdown in support of a separate state of Gorkhaland.
The GJM leadership seized the opportunity to up their ante against the Mamata Banerjee government in the state and also renew their urge for an immediate intervention by the Centre to end the deadlock.
The GJM's assistant general secretary, Binay Tamang, said: “There is no question of any relaxation in the bandh. We have already issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Centre to intervene in the logjam. We hope they will respond by August 8.”
