The Supreme Court on Friday pulled up the Centre for its failure to amend either the law or rules to allow voting rights to the NRIs through proxy and e-ballots during the elections here.

A bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud asked Additional Solicitor General Atmaram Nadkarni as to how much time the central government would take to decide on the issue.

By July 21
Declining his plea for four weeks, the court asked him to apprise the Union government’s decision by July 21.
“This is a 2014 petition and you kept on saying we will amend. This is not the way government works,” the bench told the law officer as he said the government was in the process of amending the rules framed under the Representation of People Act, 1950.
