Hooch kills five in UP

Spurious liquor claimed five lives in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, about 500 km from here, and left around a dozen others critical.

Police sources said that five policemen, including an in-charge of a police outpost, has been suspended on charges of dereliction in duty. A probe has also been ordered into the incident.

According to sources, around 17 people, all residents of Kamalapur village in the district, had consumed spurious liquor on Tuesday.

The victims complained of dizziness and vomiting soon after consuming liquor and were rushed to the hospital. Two persons died in the night while three others breathed their last on Wednesday.

Around a dozen people were battling for their lives in the hospital, sources said adding that many of them have lost their eyesight.
