Political rivals in Kashmir unite on fair and transparent reservation policy

Srinagar: In an unprecedented move, political rivals in Kashmir have put aside their differences for a time being to rally for a common cause: a fair and transparent reservation policy.

The protest comes amidst an ongoing judicial review by the High Court and the formation of a government subcommittee to address the matter.

Ruling National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament (MP), Aga Ruhullah Mehdi who is currently holding a protest against his own party's government led by Omar Abdullah over the reservation policy outside Chief Minister’s residence, here, has got offer of support from opposition PDP legislative party head Waheed ur Rehman Parra on the issue.

Ruhullah, who has long been an advocate for merit-based policies, is spearheading the protest with the goal of addressing what he sees as systemic flaws in the reservation system that disproportionately benefit certain groups while undermining fairness and merit.

On X (formerly Twitter), Parra lauded Aga’s stance, declaring, “Wholeheartedly welcome Aga Syed Ruhullah’s decision to stand with the youth in demanding rationality and fairness in reservation policies.”

He also emphasised the need for proportional representation to address socio-economic disparities without perpetuating divisive policies.

In an even more surprising turn, the demand for a fair reservation policy has also received backing from Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the influential cleric and leader of the Hurriyat Conference.

Known for his focus on religious, political and human rights issues in Kashmir, Mirwaiz has lent his voice to the cause, calling for an overhaul of the reservation system.

“The issue of reservations should be addressed with justice and fairness by those in charge, safeguarding the interests of all segments of society, not at the expense of any one group. The current status of reservations does that, by undermining the interests of the General / open merit category,” he posted on X.

While supporting the open merit students protest sit-in, Mirwaiz said he would be part of it “if authorities allow.”

“My delegation will be there to support. Will also raise the issue in #JamaMasjid whenever permitted to go,” he announced.

The protests reflect growing discontent over the reservation policy, with many citizens and leaders calling for greater transparency and fairness. While the government has taken steps to address the concerns, the protest is likely to increase pressure on the administration to act swiftly and decisively.
