JEE-Main: 23 candidates bag 100 score in first edition of exam

New Delhi: Twenty-three candidates have bagged the perfect score of 100 in the engineering entrance exam JEE-Main, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Tuesday. From Karnataka, Amogh Agrawal scored 100 in the exams. 

Among the candidates who scored 100 NTA scores, seven are from Telangana, two from Haryana, three each from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra, two from Delhi and one each from Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

A total of11.70 lakh candidates had appeared for the exam. NTA officials said that the score is not the same as the percentage of marks obtained but normalised scores.

“NTA scores are normalised scores across multi-session papers and are based on the relative performance of all those who appeared for the examination in one session. The marks obtained are converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees,” an official said.    

The NTA had conducted the exam at 544 centres across 291 cities, including 21 cities outside India. While 1221624 students had registered for the test, 1170048 appeared for it. As many as 400937 female candidates had registered for the exams, along with 820678 male candidates and nine candidates of the third gender. Eventually, 381808 female candidates, 788234 male candidates and six candidates from the third gender sat for the exams. 

The exams were held in Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Outside India, the JEE-Main exams were held in Manama, Doha, Dubai, Kathmandu, Muscat, Riyadh, Sharjah, Singapore, Kuwait City, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Abuja, Colombo, Jakarta, Moscow, Ottawa, Port Louis, Bangkok, and Washington DC. For the first time, it was conducted in Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and Oslo.

The NTA in a release said that they set up a control room to monitor and facilitate the exams, and deputed 2 national coordinators, 18 regional coordinators, 303 city coordinators, and 1083 observers, in addition to live CCTV surveillance in all centres. The centres were also monitored using Al-based tool and jammers were installed to curb malpractices.
