11th century idols found

Four idols of Jain Theerthankars, said to be of 11th century, have been found near a hill in Megalapete of the town. The stone idols measure 3 feet in height and one-and-a-half feet in width.

Director of History and Archaeology Department and Kannada Research Institute, Dharwad, Prof R M Shadaksharaiah and curator Dr S K Melkar, who examined the idols said that the history of Hungund dates back to 3rd century and spreads up to 18th century. Ramalinga temple, constructed during the times of Badami Chalukyas is located in the town.

They opined that more such idols could be found in the region.
