23 goats die; poisoning suspected

As many as 23 goats died after possibly consuming poisonous plants at Devagondanahalli in Chikkamagaluru taluk on Monday.

The goats belong to Shivanna from the same village. He had taken 100 goats to the hillock on Monday morning for grazing. While grazing, 23 goats took ill and died. It has been suspected that they have consumed leaves and fruit of 'Aralukayi', a poisonous plant.

Sheep and Wool Development Corporation director Rajesh, Belavadi village veterinary hospital doctor Ashok and Sheep Research Centre, Shivamogga, Veterinarian Rajesh carried out an autopsy of the dead goats and collected samples for further investigation to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The accurate reason for the death of the goats will be known in two to three days, said District Sheep and Wool Cooperative Society chairman A N Mahesh.

He also said that Sheep and Wool Corporation Managing Director Dr Jambagi has assured of providing compensation to Shivanna, the owner of the goats.
