Six persons including five of a family drowned in the backwaters of Basavasagara reservoir after the coracle they were travelling capsized near Koujaganur in Hungund taluk on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Mallavva Madiwalara (38), Manjula Madiwalara (18), Huligevva Madiwalara (18), Savithri Madiwalara (6), Sachin Madiwalara (5) - all of a same family, and Kariyappa Barakera (35), the sailor. Two more persons - Renuka Madiwalara (35) and Mahantesh Madiwalara (20) managed to swim to the bank.
Renuka threw the saree she was wearing towards her children, Savithri and Sachin, in a desperate attempt to save them. However, her attempt went in vain.
All were returning to their home after attending a marriage in Amaravadagi village. Strong winds and water current capsized the boat in River Krishna.
