<p>The KGF-Kolar Main Road, which passes through the town, is getting narrower by the day.<br /><br /></p>.<p>This is the most important road in the entire district as it is a connecting line between the Bangalore-Chennai National Highway 4. All people travelling from Kolar to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh via Bangarpet or Kolar Gold Fields have to drive down the Main Road.<br /><br />BEML is carrying out industrial work on the KGF-Bangarpet road. Heavy vehicles carrying goods to various places too travel on the road.<br /><br /> In addition, the setting up of garment factories on multiple points by the road has increased the number of passenger auto rickshaws carrying workers to the factories. <br />But, with the vehicles using the road increasing in number at a virtually alarming rate, the lack of a double lane has been a major denial for users of this road. <br /><br />Accidents<br /><br />The density of traffic has resulted in a far greater number of accidents too, of late. There are two to three accidents every week on this road. A recent case was the death of a school boy during a school bus accident. <br /><br />Ironically, the fact that the vehicle rammed a tree by the road led the authorities to cut down the tree instead of widening the congested road.<br /><br />On the other hand, however, the fact that the KGF-Kolar Main Road passes via Bangarpet town is an important factor behind the authorities failing to widen it or even provide proper footpaths for pedestrians. It is flanked by schools, colleges, bank branches and government offices. <br /><br />Multiple problems<br /><br />All of this has added to increase in the number of pedestrians too, who are struggling to safely cross the road. The lack of an underpass adds to their woes.<br /><br />The demand for a double lane has been flowing in from several organisations. Dalit organisations have even staged protests asking for improvement of the road, but all efforts so far have remained futile.<br /><br />No widening<br /><br />“The KGF-Kolar Main Road has seen no widening at all the last two decades. The traffic, however, has increased five-fold. Some of the private bus drivers show no regard for care or slowing down when needed. There should be a speed limit system for private buses similar to that adapted by the government buses,” insist Raitha Sangha leaders Abbani Shivappa and T N Ramegowda.<br /><br />Largest taluk<br /><br />Bangarpet is the largest taluk in Kolar district, but majorly lacks good roads. While hobli centres like Bethamangala, Kolar Gold Fields and Mulbagal have double-lane roads, Bangarpet town, the taluk headquarters, is waiting to get the facility. This, however, also shows the concern, or rather, the lack of concern of the elected representatives towards the constituency. <br /><br />“A representative from the district has even won the Parliament elections five times. He has been the National Highway minister and Railway Minister, but has failed to provide a basic amenity like a good road,” complains hotelier Mallesh Gowda, a Bangarpet resident.<br /></p>
