A colourful fest across departments

It was a cultural fiesta at KLE Society’s S Nijalingappa College as it celebrated its golden jubilee two-day youth festival SNC Suvarna Sambhrama, on the college premises recently.

The fest, that started with demonstrations by life sciences, fashion and apparel design departments, explained the experiments and projects that they had taken up during the course. An interesting experiment seen in the chemistry lab was  ‘Mr Bruhaspati’. It was the head of a man, on which there was a slot to dump in thermocol pieces stating chemistry facts. This was absorbed by the ‘magical acid’ in the head.

“Every teacher wants a student like ‘Mr Bruhaspati’, who is studious and accepts everything taught to him properly,” said Pooja Y R, a first-year BSc Chemistry student. Another interesting display was the oscillating clock reaction, where chemicals are mixed. The colour then changes from colourless to amber to violet, and this cycle repeats 15 times or more.

The bio-technology department amongst their many displays, had a display on cosmetics.  Mamata, a third-year bio-tech student, explained about the harmful effects of cosmetics. “Cosmetic and such products were meant to help in cleansing and beautifying the skin. But the effects of these products, compared to the yesteryear ones that woman used, are much harsher,” stated Mamata.
   There were other interesting displays, including jewellery-making and apparel designing, in the fashion department.

The festival, that saw many competitions like light vocal, folks song, Western vocals, mehendi competitions, debate competitions, essay writing, drawing, folk dance group and quiz, was a two-day celebration of academics and youth spirit. Actress Jayaprada spoke at the valedictory function about the increasing atrocities on women. “Crimes against women are on the rise across the country. Women are not inferior to men. We have raised a strong voice expressing concern over women’s safety across the country,” she said. She also strongly felt that the soul of the Delhi gang-rape victim would rest in peace, if the guilty are hanged.

The other guests at the event were Kannada film director Naganna, actors Srinagar Kitty and Aishwarya Nag, and artist Veena Ponnappa. Commenting on the student-teacher relationship, director Naganna expressed his concern over the widening gap between them in the present scenario.

“Students should respect teachers, tradition and preserve Indian values,” he said.
