After recent parking fee revisions, BBMP to lose Rs 40 crore revenue

Bengaluru: Following a recent revision, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is expected to lose an estimated Rs 40 crore in parking fee revenue this financial year.

Palike's Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath announced this during a press briefing on Wednesday to clarify confusion regarding parking tax changes in the city.

In a notification issued on Saturday, the BBMP proposed modifications to how parking fees are calculated under the Unit Area Value (UAV) system.

Previously, the BBMP levied Rs 7 per parking slot in commercial areas, with slight variations based on zonal classifications.

After rationalising these rates, the BBMP has now set a uniform monthly UAV of Rs 2 per parking slot in residential complexes and Rs 3 per slot in commercial establishments, regardless of the location.

"We will earn around Rs 171 crore this year from parking fees. Even though we will be collecting about Rs 40 crore less (from Rs 211 crore in 2024-25), we want to rationalise the rates and avoid situations where fees are collected, but no parking area is shown," Giri Nath said.

He welcomed public feedback and assured that the BBMP is open to reviewing the proposal if any irregularities are found. "We are doing this to make parking fees uniform across the city. We will take a decision after receiving all objections," he said.

Regarding enforcement, he said taxation laws will be followed.

If a shop is opened in a residential area, it will attract the appropriate tax. On parking fees in malls, he noted that excessive regulation could make implementation difficult.

The BBMP is currently exploring measures to address parking violations.
