<p>The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon conduct large-scale awareness programmes on garbage segregation this year. Palike members have already started distributing pamphlets with instructions on how to segregate wet and dry waste in areas such as Rajajinagar, Yelahanka and pockets of Bommanahalli. <br /><br /></p>.<p>“Every year the BBMP conducts awareness programmes, which includes door-to-door canvassing, street plays, competitions, distribution of pamphlets etc, but only at the zonal level. Sometimes not all wards can be covered due to shortage of manpower and funds. This time, we are planning to cover all wards,” a Palike official said.<br /><br />The BBMP Joint Commissioner (Health and solid waste management) K C Yatish Kumar maintained that Palike officials will be trained in waste management.<br /><br />There are some 20 programmes planned for this year under the Information-Education-Communication (IEC). We are discussing with vendors and companies to dispose off the thermacol waste produced in large quantities specially at places such as Shivajinagar and fish markets where the material is used heavily for packaging.<br /><br />BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana sought cooperation from residents, while, Mayor B S Satyanarayana echoed the same and pointed out that despite holding such programmes, citizens in some wards, continued to mix waste and hand them over to Pourakarmikas. <br /><br /></p>
