The six-car train will play a limited but effective role in reducing congestion on Namma Metro platforms and trains during peak hours on weekdays. The best feature of the big train is an exclusive coach for women.
Except for this Saturday, the train will not run on the two weekend days. From Monday to Friday, it will be deployed on four short-loop round trips between MG Road and Vijayanagar in the morning. The train will run full length on the Purple Line between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road stations with two round trips in the evenings (see box for the timetable).
The new intermediate coaches have two motor cars and a trailer car. BMRCL Managing Director Mahendra Jain said the big train had the capacity to carry 2,004 passengers, more than double that of the 975 passengers carried by three-car trains.
"It has increased energy efficiency (15%) and enhanced safety features. As it reduces overcrowding in trains, we expect more people will patronise Namma Metro," he added.
