The State government has constituted a University Review Commission under the chairmanship of N R Shetty, former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, to review the performance of universities and make recommendations to the chancellor.
The members of the commission are: Prof V B Kutinho (retd director, Bar Council of India); Prof Muniyamma, former VC, Gulbarga University; Prof M Mahadevappa, former VC, Agricultural University, and Dr A M Pathan, former VC, Central University, Gulbarga. Briefing reporters, Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande said the last commission constituted in 2008 was headed by Dr C N R Rao and it could not take up review of universities.
Also, the Karnataka State Higher Education Council has constituted a three-member expert committee headed by writer Prof S C Marulaiah, to look into problems faced by Kannada medium students pursuing postgraduate studies. The committee has been constituted after B L Shankar, former Chairperson of Legislative Council, wrote to the government giving details about problems faced by such students - lack of availability of quality textbooks forcing students to rely on “low grade” guides. This committee is expected to give its report within two months.
