CHANGING COLOURS
Last Updated 29 July 2010, 14:29 IST

Though the last decade has seen a lot of changes in the attitude of youngsters and they have become more comfortable with highlights, it is only the more eccentric ones who take the chance. Originally used to colour grey hair, hair colours have now has become a fashion trend among people, particularly youngsters who use it to get the shade of their choice.

While about a few years back, blond highlights were the ‘in’ thing in the market, especially up North, today they are not seen as much. Bangalore has seen a lot of experimenting young adults who go for colours as striking as green and orange. “You often have people with really bright highlights. Those look fashionable and not too odd,” says Rashmi, a professional. The experts say India is still a place where people are quite cautious with their hair and prefer a pitch black colour to anything else.

One of the common problems with hair colouring is that the colour remains in the hair while fading out and may look really bad. “Many people make the mistake of going for a permanent colour which looks really bad after a month when the hair grows out,” says hairstylist, Stephan Zanz. “I used to have blond highlights which turned out really bad after a month and looked very odd,” says Suchi, a professional. “The important thing is to have a hairstyle that would suit the colour and would look good even when the colour starts to wear off,” says Stephan.

But in spite of the availability of modern hair colouring products, most people here still feel apprehensive about taking the step. “It is a little easier for people living away from home, but if you are living with your parents, you have to inform them about something like this. This is not exactly the same as going in for a haircut,” says Suchi.

But for those, who do decide on this, colouring is something that can instantly change your look. “A person with coloured hair never really goes unnoticed. If done well, the hair looks stylish and creates a lasting impression,” says Neeti, a student. Some of the popular colours, that seem work for most people, are dark shades of burgundy, mahogany and eggplant. These go well with dark brown and black hair and thus, are perfect for the women here. “In order to get the best results, one should go for a hair colour that suits your skin tone as well as eye colour,” says Michelle, a hairstylist. Also for the cautious lot, herbal colours work out the best as they are natural and damage-free.
