Palike has a flag of its own

As the debate rages whether the state should have a separate flag, BBMP already has its own flag that flies alongside the Tri-colour atop its head office at NR Junction.

The separate flag for BBMP came into picture for the first time in 1964 when noted Gandhian and Kannada activist G Narayana was the mayor of the then Bangalore City Corporation. Researchers of Bengaluru’s history tried finding out the origin of the Bengaluru municipal corporation’s flag, but they could not find any reference.

S S Khandre, former PRO of the BBMP, said Narayana was indeed the man behind the separate flag for the civic body. “When I was asked to write an article for a souvenir for the BBMP Officers and Employees’ Association, I tried finding out the flag’s origin. All that I could learn was that it originated when Narayana was the mayor. I searched the council records of 1964, but I could not find any supporting document. It just popped up from somewhere. Nobody has objected to it.”
