Last Updated 14 December 2014, 19:21 IST

The KR Puram police have unearthed an online scam which is suspected to have cheated scores of people to the tune of crores of rupees.

According to police, five persons were running an online advertisement viewing and chain link scheme.

This website was operated by one Damodar Reddy, the kingpin, along with his associates.

Around four days ago, Srinivas, a businessman and a resident of Mysuru, lodged a complaint at the KR Puram police station, stating that he was cheated of Rs 18 lakh by the owners of Adops.biz over the last three months. Now, the website has gone offline, said police.

A senior police officer said, “The website was basically an advertisement viewer. Anyone can visit the website and become a member of it. The members also can advertise about the company owned by them or about their business. The members receive money in their account every time they view different ads on the website. The more number of ads they visit, the more money they get.”

Introducing members

“Introducing other people to the website also fetches the members money. The complainant approached KR Puram police station as the accused had rented a small room near the KR Puram government college and posted pictures of the room online, claiming it to be their office. This office was started near the college three months ago. It was shut down around a month ago,” added the officer.

The police said that they are verifying the exact amount of money that victims have been cheated.

The number of people who have become members is also being verified. A few accused have been traced and will be arrested at the earliest, they said. The KR Puram police have registered a case and are investigating.
