D T Venkatamalumaiah, attached to the Chickpet traffic police station, had towed Lalithamma’s vehicle (KA 05/HF 2324) near BVK Iyengar Road in Chickpet on Monday, as it was parked in the no-parking zone. The ASI demanded a fine of Rs 300 from Lalithamma for violation of parking rules. Lalithamma said she could pay Rs 200 only as she did not have sufficient money.

Venkatamalumaiah accepted the offer and pocketed the sum without issuing a receipt. He let the vehicle go in spite of the violation.

The policeman might have easily forgotten the incident and carried on. But Lalithamma did not. She complained to senior police officers over the phone. Acting on the complaint, ACP (Traffic West) investigated the incident and found the cop guilty of dereliction of duty and negligence.
