Roads split open as rain wreaks havoc in City

Scores of potholes have surfaced and the asphalt on roads has been severely damaged across the City due to continuous downpour in the last few days. The battered roads are posing a real challenge to motorists.

The BBMP’s assurance of a pothole-free City has been washed away with the asphalt, leaving behind craters and gravel all around. The bad state of the roads raises questions about the quality of asphalting.

Arterial and sub-arterial roads, including the one leading to the Kempegowda International Airport, have borne the brunt of rains. The potholes are growing bigger and water-logged, turning into virtual death traps for motorists.

The road leading to Vivekananda Nagar from Bhuvaneshwari Nagar is in a terrible state with both sides dug up by the BBMP.

A gaping pothole between Bull Temple Road and Ganesh Bhavan poses danger to motorists. The busy Ramakrishna Ashram Road is in a shambles at many places. Distraught residents tried to provide a red soil cover but in vain.

Similarly, Jayanagar, Ittamadu, Infantry Road, Indiranagar 100 feet road, KR Road, Kalasipalya, Bannerghatta Road, Sarakki, surroundings of Banashankari temple, Kanakapura Road have become a motorist’s nightmare.

Engineer-in-Chief of the BBMP M R Venkatesh said that for quite a long time, no major road asphalting work was taken up.

“The potholes are surfacing only on those roads which were laid many years ago. Nevertheless, once the rain stops, we will take up the work on a warfooting utilising the Rs 1,000-crore grant BBMP received from the State government under the Nagarotthana Yojane,” he said.
