'Save trees' campaign takes a political hue

Last Updated 29 June 2011, 19:32 IST

The local BJP workers in the area led by block president Jagannath chose to enter the area just after the first round of auction. They began to shout slogans supporting the road widening and cutting of trees.

Tensions rose between the two groups and the BJP workers verbally abused the protesters.

“This is not a fashion show. You have all come for a catwalk. This is one day affair to you”, they said.

A war of words ensued between the two groups and threatened to turn ugly. When questioned about their behaviour, their ire turned towards a journalist and a photojournalist of two leading English dailies, who were not spared of profanities and were nearly assaulted.

The BJP protesters began mocking by pointing out to the soon-to-be-sacrificed, but perfectly healthy fig tree claiming, “See, it has to be cut. This tree is dying.” Another party worker said, “Every tree is cut for the people’s good.”

Finally, they resorted to give political overtones to the issue claiming that the people protesting were bitter about having lost the BBMP elections and were trying to create problem.
