Sharadamma certain to be next Mayor

Last Updated 28 April 2011, 19:06 IST

Hours before the election to the posts, the ruling BJP arrived at the decision to give charge of the City to Sharadamma and Harish. The consensus was arrived at after two days of hectic lobbying and marathon meetings led by Home Minister R Ashok, local MLAs and corporators.

While the speculation over  the last one month indicated consensus in favour of   Sharadamma, giving the baton of deputy mayor to S Harish came as a big surprise at a time when N Nagaraj's candidature was doing the rounds.

The party also consensually declared JP Park corporator Nanjundappa as the ruling party's floor leader in the Council. The members of the taxation and finance committees would be appointed soon after the mayoral election.

Challenged

The HC on Thursday ordered issue of notice to BBMP as K N Thimmananjaiah, an independent corporator and the member of the Standing Committee for Health, filed a petition challenging the elections to the Standing Committees being held on Friday. The Court, while refusing to stay the elections, has held the results of the elections to be subject to result of the writ petition.

The petitioner had challenged the validity of the elections to the Standing Committees stating that it was a violation of Section 17 (1) of the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act 1976 which stated that elections could not be held before the completion of the term of the Standing Committees. The present Committees have completed six months of tenure.
