A techie from Pune has absconded after a case was registered against him at the women’s police station in Halasuru last month for harassing his wife for dowry.

Vishal Varma (name changed) absconded on January 24, 2017, after his wife Sushma (not her real name) made a police complaint against him and his parents. Sushma, also a techie, hails from Mumbai and had married Varma on December 21, 2011. As she worked in Mumbai and Varma in Pune, the couple didn’t live together initially. Sushma has suggested that her husband “began avoiding” her soon after the wedding. Even during their honeymoon, he stayed separately.

What’s more, Varma “avoided” her even when he visited her home in Mumbai, she stated in the complaint. After sometime, Varma landed a job at a company in Bengaluru and rented a flat in Whitefield. Sushma, too, quit her job and moved to Bengaluru. Varma’s parents joined them later.

Sushma claimed that her in-laws often harassed her for not bringing “enough dowry. They wanted her to gift her flat in Mumbai to Varma. She agreed to do so provided her husband cohabited with her and that led to childbirth. Sushma told the police that Varma had some medical problems which he hadn’t disclosed before the wedding.
