Mayur Vihar, a residential area in East Delhi is well-known for its DDA flats. Situated across the Yamuna River, Mayur Vihar, as the name suggests, is the dwelling (vihar) of the peacock (mayur).

In the proximity of the Commonwealth Games village, the locality is well connected to the Delhi Metro and has a good connectivity of buses too.

Despite this, locals here are a harried lot. “Sewage is a major problem here. Whenever it rains, there is water clogging everywhere. Moreover, crime has also increased in our locality. We hear cases of chain snatching every now and then,” said Deen Dayal Aggarwal.

Another local also had his share of problems about the locality.

“The roads are very poorly maintained. Every time they repair the roads, it goes back to its original bad shape within one week. There are also serious cleanliness issues here. The parks here have become the dumping ground for the residents. No one is there to take care of these parks and maintain them regularly,” complained Mohan Gupta.

On the other hand Ajay Sharma, another resident had some good things to say about the locality. “It is very green and not thickly populated. All of us mostly belong to the middle class, so there is no class complex here.”

He also added, “But there is a severe sewage problem here. We also face a lot of traffic issues due to the metro here.”

Situated between Pandavnagar, Trilokpuri, Chilla Village, Chilla DDA Janata Flats and River Yamuna, Mayur Vihar also has a number of educational coaching institutes for medical and engineering entrance exam preparation like Resonance, Aakash Institute and Brilliant Tutorials.

The most popular shopping area is the Acharya Niketan market.

Anita Gautam, a resident here said, “The good thing about this area is its proximity to the airport, railway station, markets and malls.”

Mayur Vihar’s phase one is famous for its Uttara Guruvayoorappan Temple which is built on the lines of this famous shrine in Kerala. The locality also boasts of a Shirdi Sai Baba temple, which is walking distance from ASN School and Star City Shopping Mall.
