Police said Shyamala and her husband Narayanappa, a physical education teacher at a village school, were undergoing treatment at the Yelahanka government hospital.

The couple had been lending money for interest for the last 10 years. According to police, an anganwadi worker, Akkayya, had borrowed Rs two lakh from Shyamala and Narayanappa some four years ago. Since then, the couple had been pestering her to return the money.

Unable to bear their torture, the woman had once complained to the Yelahanka police station, but no action was taken against the duo.

On Wednesday, Shyamala and Narayanappa allegedly threatened Akkayya with dire consequences if she failed to return the money. Angry, her son Upendra stormed into her house and roughed up the couple. Later, the mob took them out in a procession around the village.

The Yelahanka police, who rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control.

Cases have been booked against Shyamala, Narayanappa, Akkayya, her son Upendra and others. Upendra is said to be absconding.
