Six students suffered injuries after a car rammed the autorickshaw in which they were travelling in near Santhekatte Junction in Udupi on Friday morning.

They have been admitted to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal and are said to be out of danger. The injured students have been identified as Pavitra, Shreya, Prajna, Shravya, Prekshan and Rakshan, all in the age group of 10 to 12 years.

They are students of Mount Rosary School, Santhekatte and St Joseph Primary School, Kallianpur.

Autorickshaw driver Jolly Diwakar Palan (48) also sustained injuries on his face and he too is undergoing treatment at the hospital in Manipal.

Sources from Udupi traffic police station said that a car was overspeeding near the service road and was on its way to Udupi from Santhekatte.

The driver of the car George D’Souza made an attempt to overtake another vehicle but lost control and rammed the autorickshaw.

Though the CCTV camera installed by the district administration at the spot was not functioning, the police have asked the private business complex owner to assist them by providing the CCTV footage recorded at the time of the accident. George, who has been charged under sections 279, 337 and 338 of IPC, has secured bail.
