Zilla Panchayat president Dinaker Babu said that increasing population has become a bane to the world, which calls for immediate action to curtail the explosion.

Speaking after inaugurating the World Population Day programme organised by the district administration and the Zilla Panchayat, the president said that population explosion has resulted in lack of facilities for the people. The resources are drained. The explosion of the population has resulted in unemployment for the youths, which has resulted in the young people engaging in illegal activities.

Population should be controlled and family planning measures should not be limited and concentrating to one section of the society. The country has youth force in abundance, which should be utilised properly.

Babu lauded the efforts by the Asha and anganwadi workers who are involved in the door-to-door campaign over family planning measures both in urban and rural areas.

Speaking on the occasion, DHO Dr Rohini said that the population of the country as per the 2011 census is 1.21 billion as against the 1.02 billion during 2001 census. In Karnataka, the population has increased from 5.28 crore as per the data available from 2001 census to 6.10 crore. In Udupi, the population is 11.77 lakh. There is 17.5% increase in the country’s population in 2011, 15.6% in Karnataka and 5.85% in Udupi respectively.

Elaborating over the sex ratio, the DHO said the sex ratio in the country has increased from 933 to 943, while in Karnataka it has increased from 965 to 973.

Zilla Panchayat vice president Sheela Shetty released the pamphlets carrying the messages over the awareness on population control and family planning measures on the occasion.
