'Committee to highlight plight of specially abled'

He was speaking to Deccan Herald during his visit to the city to inaugurate a pilot study of the Unique Identification Development Authority of India (UIDAI) here on Monday to identify issues faced by differently abled during enrollment for the Unique Identity Number.

He said that the committee would represent the people’s voice to inform the State about the various problems being faced by the differently abled.

Furthermore, he mentioned that a report will be filed with the State Government soon that will highlight the problems being faced by the differently abled, the programmes being undertaken by the government and what needs to be done to bridge the gap.

Observing that the ` 500 to 600 crore designated for the differently abled was available with local institutions, he said that grama panchayats should take the lead in identifying the people who require the facilities.

If such measures are taken up, then the problems can be solved at a local level at a much faster rate, he observed.

Commenting about the District Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) here, he said that the Women and Child Welfare Department had vacated the premises and work was being undertaken to equip the DRC.

Recollecting the services of the DRC, Rajanna said, “Earlier, when I was in Chamarajanagar, DRC used to provide service to the people in the neighbouring districts as well.” 

Stressing on the importance of providing complete rehabilitation for the differently abled, he said that it was necessary to recruit qualified technical staff at the DRC.
