Engg student writes exam in left hand, scores 70%

Accident no deterrent

Roopa Halageri, a student of final year BE (Computer Science) at Canara Engineering College whose right hand was seriously injured in an accident and later wrote answers in left hand in the examination, has secured 70 percent results.

She is the eldest daughter of Dinakar Halageri and Prathimadevi.

Roopa had received serious injuries in her right hand in an accident on February 16 when a lorry hit the bus in which she was travelling from Kundapur. She was the only passenger who was injured in the accident. With the help of Niveditha, her co-passenger, she was taken to a private hospital in Udupi and later to KMC, Manipal, for treatment. She was operated on her right hand and six surgeries were performed in the next one-and-a-half months. Still, she has to undergo with one more surgery. The college administration, teachers and students helped her in bearing the expenses of the treatment, which has crossed Rs 4 lakh.

Due to the accident, she had to lose one year of her study. When the right hand was recovered, Roopa did not keep quiet. She kept on trying to write using her left hand, with the support of her mother. She was successful in writing the examination within the specified duration.

When the results were announced, she took everyone by surprise scoring 70 percent marks. She has also got a job in a company in Bengaluru. She said she performed with confidence in the interview.

Her younger sister Deepa, who works at a dental college in Mangaluru, said she was able to make it with sheer hard work and courage.
