Farming is a profitable venture and one needs to work hard to get good returns. Farming has helped me to attain self-sufficiency, said Halladahalli Parameshwarappa, a resident of Devanoor.

He has been cultivating vegetables on three and a half acres of land owned by him. The lack of rain and shortage of labourers did not pose a hurdle for him in achieving success.

He constructed a farm pond to store rainwater and set up two polyhouses on 20 guntas of land.

He cultivates capsicum, beans, and cucumber inside the polyhouses. He has harvested 40 quintals of beans and 800 packets of cucumber (30 kg per packet).

He could fetch Rs 1200 per quintals of beans and Rs 450 to 500 per packet of cucumber. The merchants come to the spot to purchase the farm produce.

“I cultivate two varieties of vegetables once in three months,” he says.

The rainwater from the polyhouses enters the farm pond and the water stored in the pond is used for watering the plants.

He also cultivates 100 coconut and 400 arecanut trees on his farmland. The water stored in the farm pond is also used for irrigating coconut and arecanut trees.

Along with traditional methods of farming, one needs to have knowledge of the latest technology in farming to excel in agriculture, said Parameshwarappa.
