The setting up of the Basava studies centre would promote the principles of saint Basaveshwara in Europe, said S Mahadevaiah, Basava International Foundation here.

Addressing a press meet on Friday, he said the foundation would set up the Basava chair for the university. About three students from England have shown interest to pursue Basava studies.

The research would stretch about three years and the foundation would fund a cost of about Rs 80 lakh towards the research programme at the chair.

The foundation has been promoting Basavanna and his principles around the world. His 101 works have been translated to English and French. Saint Basaveshwara is a social reformer and he should not be restricted to a particular community, he said adding that the people interested to support the initiative can help the foundation.

Former mayor R J Narasimha Iyengar, Rudraswamy, Ramakrishna and former corporator M C Chikkanna were present.
