<p>Governor Vajubhai Vala on Monday said poverty could be eradicated if each of the well-off families adopts a poor family and takes up the responsibility of their upliftment.<br /><br /></p>.<p>In his Republic Day address at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground, he advocated the need for following ‘Each one Teach One’ policy to ensure that deprived children get education. <br />“If we spend a small portion of what society has given us on poor families, we can see happiness all around. The wealthy class should think of the have-nots, so that everybody can eat like us and sleep in peace,” he stated.<br /><br />Democratic governance and administration are tools for bringing in social change, which includes eradication of poverty, bringing equality and social justice. So, the democratic institution should be protected and the belief of people in democratic governance should be strengthened, he said, adding that there was a need to make more efforts to bring peace and happiness in the country. <br /><br />The Governor lauded the State government’s recent initiatives like ‘MobileOne’ - to provide governance on mobile phones to the people - clean drinking water to people in drought-prone villages, bringing down infant mortality rate and wiping out malnutrition among children.<br /><br />Noting that people should rise above the differences of religion, caste, colour and community and march ahead in building the nation, Vala called upon one and all to pledge to achieve ‘Swachch Bharat’ through ‘Swachch Karnataka’ initiative.<br /><br />The real meaning of Republic will be achieved only if every citizen works towards the progress of the country, while keeping in mind its culture and tradition. “Let us together protect, preserve and encourage the incomparable culture, art and tradition of the State. Let us put in our best efforts and contribute to the progress of the State,” he stated.<br /><br /></p>
