Hands-on surgery training for students

The Bangalore Medical College Development Trust (BMCDT), formed by the BMC alumni, will set up the surgical skills centre at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. The idea is to provide practical training to students by providing animal tissues, mannequin, electronic videos, etc.

Former registrar of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Dr K M Srinivas Gowda, said, “In India and many developing countries, medical schools do not provide much practical training to students. As a result, the student learns about suturing by doing it on a live patient. The centre will first train the teachers, who will then be able to teach the students and interns.”

So, while the BMCDT will contribute Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, the rest will be contributed by Johnson and Johnson company. The centre will be functional by March 2011,” Gowda said. The BMCDT was set up in 2005 by the alumni, most of them settled in the US and the UK, during the golden jubilee of the BMC.
