Union Minister of State for Drinking Water & Sanitation Ramesh Jigajinagi on Thursday questioned why the Congress did not bother to make B R Ambedkar President of India when it  had an opportunity.

Criticising the Congress for fielding former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar against NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, the minister said the Congress should have extended its support to Kovind.

Congress governments did not bother to confer Bharat Ratna on Ambedkar. The party also did not display a portrait of Ambedkar in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Instead of showing its affection towards SCs now by fielding Meira, the Congress should have given its due respect to Ambedkar earlier, he said.
