Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda on Friday warned of strict action against individuals forcing shops and establishments to close down the shutter, citing calls for a Karnataka bandh on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, Dayananda said extensive arrangements have been made to ensure law and order in the city is maintained during the bandh. He said that it is against the law to force anyone to participate in the bandh and such acts will attract action from the police.

Dayananda said that the police met with the representatives of the organisations calling for a bandh. The organisations have been instructed to act according to the law, and they will be held responsible for any untoward incident.

“The organisers will have to bear the cost if any property is damaged during the bandh,” Dayananda added.

The top cop said that all inspectors and other police officers have been instructed to make necessary arrangements and supervise the situation on Saturday. Additionally, striking force and home guards will also be roped in for the security measures, according to Dayananda.

Police will also initiate strict measures if organisers call for any rallies or indulge in any act against the law.

Notice to autorickshaw unions

Additionally, police have also issued notices to autorickshaw unions urging them not to take part in any rally or raise slogans. If done, the police have warned of strict action against them.

However, Vatal Nagaraj, who gave a bandh call, has vowed to do a rally from Town Hall despite levying restrictions.

Speaking to reporters, Ravi Shetty Byndoor, Chairman of the Labour Council and a pro-Kannada activist, said, "Government is using the Police to suppress us. Vatal Nagaraj has called for a bandh. For that, many people have voluntarily come forward to go on a bandh. We are here to convince the bus drivers and operators. But they are stopping us. The government is sending us notice after notice. What are we, goons? We will start the rally at 11 am. We will take out the rally from Town Hall to Freedom Park."

Karnataka Bandh LIVE | Kannada activists detained in Belagavi

Activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Shivaramegowda faction), who had been staging protests supporting Karnataka bandh at Channamma Circle in Belagavi, were detained by the police on Saturday.

They raised slogans against MES demanding it be banned.

Police detained them and opened the road for traffic movement.

State-wide bandh called Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj and supported by few pro-Kannada organisations, received good response in Mandya, mixed response in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar. The bandh was called, condemning the attack on the NWKRTC conductor for asking commuters to speak in Kannada recently.

In Mysuru, pro-Kannada activists protested near the Suburban bus stand and tried to stop the buses. But they were detained and released later. Hotel owners extended moral support to Bandh and opened the hotels as usual. Shops were open and private vehicular movement including autos was also not affected.

Bandh received a good response in the Mandya city area. The bandh was supported by pro-Kannada organisations like Kannada Sene, Kadamba Sene and farmers' organisations. They protested by holding grass near Sanjay circle and took out a bike rally on the streets of the city.

They even stopped a KSRTC bus moving from Bengaluru to Virajpet near Sanjay circle. Many closed shops voluntarily. However, the movement of KSRTC as well as private vehicles was not affected.

Schools also were not closed. The activists urged for implementation of the Mekedaatu project at the downstream of Cauvery basin. They opposed Cauvery fifth stage drinking water project of Bengaluru. Police beefed up security measures.

Few pro-Kannada organisations staged protests by holding placards, throwing tomatoes on the road in Chamarajanagar. The situation was normal in Hassan district. In both districts, Commercial activities were not affected and all shops, and markets were open as usual. Vehicular movement was also not affected. Buses, autos, and private vehicles plied as usual.

Bengaluru police detained over 50 protesters on Saturday who were raising slogans and attempting to start a rally from Town Hall, located in the heart of the city.

The police ferried them to Freedom Park in a BMTC bus. Protesters arrived at Town Hall in groups, but the police intervened, stopping them and taking them to Freedom Park, following orders from Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda.
