The coastal security in Uttara Kannada district is set to get a boost with the ultramodern C-155 interceptor boat reaching the Indian Coast Guard Station at Karwar port on Wednesday.

The Rs 30-crore vessel built by the Bharati Shipyard Limited, Mumbai, is capable of patrolling the coast for 10 hours uninterruptedly. The 27.6 m-long boat weighs 71 tonnes and can sail at a speed of 35 nautical miles per hour (64.82 kmph). It is equipped with a radar system which can detect water-borne and air-borne objects up to a distance of 45 nautical miles.

The boat is armed with a heavy and light machine gun among other weapons. A team of 10 personnel led by Commandant Jagannath Behr will be in charge of the boat. It is expected to be commissioned in March this year.
