Kogilu eviction: Provide temporary housing, human rights panel tells Karnataka govt

Bengaluru: In its interim recommendation, the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has directed the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to provide a temporary housing facility for the families evicted from Kogilu layout in view of the cold weather.

The commission has also directed the authority to provide food, drinking water by setting up a facility in the nearby playground. It also wants the GBA to set up a mobile health centre for the benefit of displaced families. 

The order was issued by T Sham Bhat, chairperson, and S K Vantigodi, member of the commission, on December 30. 

On December 21, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd (BSWML) had demolished 160 to 170 sheds which had come up on the government land in Kogilu Layout. Four private individuals had filed a complaint with the commission against the government officers on the charges of violating human rights. Subsequently, the members of the commission visited the site and interacted with the affected families. 

Noting that it is the responsibility of the government to provide basic facilities to ensure dignity of life to the citizens, the commission issued the directions to provide temporary accommodation
facilities.
