Residents of villages surrounding Lokapavani River in Srirangapatna taluk are heaving a sigh of relief with water flow resuming in the river.

The river had gone completely dry last month and the Friday rains in the district has given life to the river. The river is said to provide drinking water to many villages, and has brought smiles on the faces of the villagers.

Agricultural activities

With no agricultural activities, the pump sets of the farmers which had remained unused has now resurfaced near the river.

Women have resumed washing clothes and utensils and some even their domestic animals.

Lokapavani River is constrained to provide water only to the district, as it surfaces near Honakere near Nagamangala and travels 35 km providing water to the villages on its way, before it joins River Cauvery near Nimishamba temple, Ganjam.

The river had gone completely dry due to deficit monsoon last year and had become a haven for illegal sand mining activities.
