Last Updated 26 February 2014, 18:56 IST

Tension prevailed for over five hours near Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Circle (popular as Highway Circle), in the city, on Wednesday, as a pedestrian was fatally run over by a lorry. The agitators withdrew the protest only after the civic authorities installed stone bars, prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles on the particular stretch of the road.

Anjaneya (38) of B B Keri, C V Road in Mandi Mohalla, was allegedly run over by a speeding lorry on the road leading to the industrial ‘A’ Layout in Bannimantap from the Highway Circle around 1.20 pm. The lorry driver reportedly sped off after the mishap, involving Anjaneya, a ragpicker, triggering protest from the locals.

Though the body was shifted to the mortuary attached to Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC and RI), the agitators refused to withdraw their protest, citing police inaction in checking the speed of heavy vehicles.

Finally, around 5.30 pm, a section of corporators, who had joined the locals in their protest, succeeded in forcing the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) to install kerb stones in the middle of the road, to prevent the movement of heavy vehicles.Police sources said, two lorries have been captured at the time of mishap on CCTV cameras installed at the junction.
