Man trampled to death

A wild elephant trampled a person to death while a tamed elephant was chasing the rogue tusker back to forest at Marapala near Thithimathi on Monday. 

The deceased has been identified as Das (54). It was said that the wild elephant had camped inside a coffee plantation 15 days ago. Tamed elephant Abhimanyu was used for chasing it back to forest. The incident occurred when Das was at coffee estate belonging to Devarapura Church and was releasing the tied cattle. 

Though the forest officials rushed him to the hospital, he breathed his last on the way to hospital. 

Range Forest Officer Devaraj handed over a cheque of Rs 2.5 lakh to family of Das. The post mortem was conducted at Gonikoppa Government Hospital. Former MLC Arun Machaiah, Zilla Panchayat member D N Prithyu, Tatu Monappa and others visited the family.
