M'lore varsity seats for third gender, J&K, NE students

Mangalore University has reserved one seat each for third gender, Jammu & Kashmir migrants and North Eastern students, in all PG courses, offered by it during 2015-16. 

The extra seats have not been reserved for MBA and MCA as Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) is conducted at the State-level.

Supreme Court in its judgement in 2014 had directed that transgenders be treated as “third gender” for safeguarding their rights under Part III of the Constitution and laws made by Parliament and State legislature.

Further, from this academic year, the university has also decided to reserve one seat each for achievers in sports, NCC, NSS, cultural activities, Scouts and University employee quota in each post-graduate course. Currently, only one seat has been reserved for admission to each post-graduate course in the NCC, NSS and sports quota.

Along with these extra seats, eight per cent of seats in all courses have been reserved for students from Hyderabad-Karnataka.

This was introduced last year itself. With the State government implementing Article 371 (J) of the Constitution, providing special status, reservation in jobs and educational opportunities to people of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region in the districts coming under the region and outside the region. The State government had directed all universities including deemed universities to earmark eight per cent of the seats for the students of Hyderabad Karnataka.  

With this, under extra seats— children of ex-servicemen/ differently abled candidates; sports; NCC; NSS; cultural activity; scouts, MU employees, J and K migrants, North Eastern students and transgenders, a total of 10 seats have been earmarked in Applied Botany, Applied Chemistry, Applied Zoology, Biochemistry, Bioscience, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Computer Science, Marine Geology, Economics, Electronics, English, History, Kannada, Geo informatics, MHRD, MSW, MBA (Tourism), MCJ, Library Science, Material Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics, Yogic Science and PG Diploma in Yogic Science; nine seats for BPEd and MPEd and 12 seats in commerce.

When Deccan Herald contacted Registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya, he said it was P B Acharya, Governor of Nagaland who proposed the idea of reserving seats for North Eastern students.

The extra seats have also been reserved under the category of extra seats in the constituent colleges— University College in Mangaluru, FMKMC College in Madikeri and PG Centre at Chikkaluvara.
