New born baby re-united with its mother

It was a case of mistaken identity, leading to confusion

The issue surrounding alleged kidnapping of a new born baby boy from Cheluvamba Children’s Hospital, in the city, ended amicably on Tuesday, with the baby reuniting with its mother.

According to the hospital authorities and Devaraja police, it was a case of mistaken identity with another woman, whose daughter had delivered at the same time, taking the baby under her care.

On Monday, Sharadamma, aged 35 years and wife of Mahadeva Swamy from Tagadur in Nanjangud taluk in the district had delivered a baby.

However due to birth time complications, the baby was admitted to neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU), while the mother was at ward number five. After sometime, the nurse in the unit called loudly for Sharadamma’s relatives, if any, to take the baby to its mother.

However, Puttadevamma, mother of Sakamma whose newly born baby too was at NICU, had taken the baby, signing the related register. Incidentally, Sakamma’s husband’s name is Mahadev.

What followed later was a quick run of allegations, with the parents of the baby suspecting foul play. For Sharadamma and Mahadev, who have been married for seven years, the baby is their first child and the pain of losing it, was indeed unbearable.

However, on Tuesday, the matter was resolved after Sakamma at ward seven grew suspicious about the baby being hers. She asked her mother and aunt to verify the same. The baby was handed over to Sharadamma’s mother and aunt later.
