The tribals in Holekoodige in Idakani Gram Panchayat have to depend on coracles to cross Bhadra river to reach Balehonnur or Magundi.

In the rainy season, it is considered dangerous to cross the swollen river using coracles. The Malnad has received good rainfall and the water-level in the river has increased drastically.

However, the tribals have no other option than the coracle to reach the main road.

No bridge

In spite of bringing the issue to the notice of the authorities, no efforts have been made to construct a bridge across the river so far.

As many as four tribal families reside in the village. More than 15 schoolchildren have to use this coracle to reach Balehonnur or Magundi for attending schools.

Even women who go for daily wages to Balehonnur are forced to use the coracle.

The families in the areas have been appealing to the elected representatives and officers for road connectivity to their settlement.

People have to cross the river to purchase groceries, transport produce and get medical help as well.

Little contact

“Without connectivity, the families do not have much contact with the outside areas. The youth in the village do not get brides as well,” said the residents.

A mud road connecting Balehole is filled with potholes. It is not conducive for movement of vehicles. If the road is repaired, then the residents can travel to Balehole which will connect Balehonnur.

According to Sandesh, they have been paying the house tax on time to the gram panchayat. “However, none of the authorities have come forward to solve our woes,” he rued.
