<p>Mangaluru: The Food Chain Campaign, which was started nine months ago with an intention to understand and create awareness about food consumption and farming, will organise a student-farmer rally at Kudmal Ranga Rao Town Hall in Mangaluru on December 7.</p><p>Yathish Thukaram, who has over a decade of experience in the food industry, along with Dr Saurish Hegde, launched the Food Chain Campaign to bridge the gap between students and farmers.</p><p>Dr Saurish Hegde said as part of the campaign, regular workshops and seminars are held in colleges to promote awareness and innovative farming practices. The workshops are aimed at improving the soil conditions.</p><p>"Farmers have been selflessly growing food for us and now we feel it is time that we as public and students play our role in upgrading the quality of food. We can do this by everyday choices in choosing the food we eat, spreading word about local farmers' produce and learning about the locally grown crops," said Dr Hegde to DH.</p>.India, Italy explore areas to advance cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors.<p><strong>'Community participation'</strong></p><p>Yathish Thukaram said institutions like Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), CPCRI, Cashew Research Centre are supporting the initiative. "It is a community participation for supporting local farmers to improve the quality of food we get. Through the campaign, we discuss ideas about life of farmers, issues bothering them, and how to improve the food production."</p><p>Dr Hegde said, "Presently, we are focusing on improving the quality of soil, thereby increasing the production. In addition, we are also looking at alternative food crops, to improve the nutritional base in the region. The decline in paddy cultivation will also pose significant risks to the region's food security in the coming years."</p>.<p><strong>To educate students</strong></p><p>The programme aims to educate students about agriculture and the adoption of modern technologies. Progressive farmers will participate in the rally.</p><p>He said the rally signifies the interest and need for the involvement of the student community to support the farmers in the region. Prior to the rally, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Head Scientist Dr T J Ramesh, Cashew Research Head Dr Dinakar Adiga, CPCRI, Kasargod, Director Dr Balachandra Hebbar will discuss with the farmers.</p>
