Students refuse to eat food prepared by SC woman

In a strange and rare move, the students of Surya Government Higher Primary School at Nada Gram Panchayat limits in Belthangady taluk in the Dakshina Kannada district boycotted the mid-day meals on Thursday.

The reason: The food was cooked cooked by a woman belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) community, appointed by the authorities concerned.

Sumithra, a young woman belonging to Scheduled Caste  community, had joined the school as an assistant cook on Thursday.

On the same day, 41 students remained away from the mid-meal because the food was cooked by a woman belonging to ‘lower caste,’ while seven students belonging to Scheduled Caste had food.

Block Education Officer (BEO) from Belthangady visisted the government school and there are possibilities of higher officers visiting the school on Thursday.
